I'm going to let you in on a little secret Woodworkers are a pain in the ass to shop for but don't worry in this video I'm going to run through a few gifts that you need to flat out stop buying and I'll give you some great suggestions to keep that special woodworker in your heart from clicking confirm on that return first up power tools do not buy them power tools now I know this might seem wrong but trust me if you buy them power tools they will either rarely get used or they will get returned for something else if you don't believe me then ask my wife yep instead consider getting them something nice to wear in the shop while they're working remember woodworking is an expensive hobby so most of us don't want to budget in quality Workwear but that doesn't mean we don't appreciate it a brand that I recently discovered and enjoy is bad their clothes are tailored to the woodworker that need something durable but doesn't want to be swimming in it if you know you know another clothing option is merch if the woodworker you're shopping for has a favorite content creator or a popular woodworker why not get them some swag from that person the second gift you should not buy for a woodworker is wood again you may think this is a super considerate gift and I get it who doesn't love getting a special delivery of some premium wood no seriously don't buy them wood there are just too many variables to consider species Rifts on quarter sun six quarter eight quarter air dried Kiln dried the list goes on and on let them handle this one on their own instead consider a set of woodworking plans now I know this might seem like a daunting task because there are still a ton of options here but all it takes is a couple of probing questions and you should be able to narrow it down to two basic categories have they ever expressed an interest in building Furniture pieces if so are they not sure where to start if they're not a set of plans could be the missing piece to get them started if they aren't sure they want to build Furniture pieces maybe a set of shop plans would interest them I personally just bought the flip top tool cart plans from Eric spinsley to help maximize my small shop space I haven't built it yet but hey that's for another video third tool or tool category I should say that you should stop buying would be hand tools now if the woodworker you're shopping for has expressed that they would never want to spend hours sharpening a chisel or flattening a board with a hand plane this is a pretty easy category to skip altogether but even if they haven't or if they've expressed that they would like to try it don't fall for it they will take that beautiful budget-friendly Japanese pole saw you got them that they asked for by the way and one of two things are going to happen one they will hate you for entertaining their stupidity after they spend an hour cutting a dovetail or two they will enjoy that saw until they discover Rob Cosman and his beautiful dovetail saw at which point the saw you got them will be a constant reminder that you don't love them that much I love you this many dollars worth instead look into getting them a woodworking book now it's important you know your audience here if you think they would enjoy a nice book with some good pictures in it then get them a hard copy that they can take to their favorite place to relax what the myself I enjoy audiobooks because they allow me to have something to listen to while I'm out working in the shop also it doesn't have to be a woodworking book number four on this list is another category of tools I like to call them layout tools I'm talking about tape measures rulers squares depth gauges miter gauges basically anything you would use when laying out your work now there's no doubt these tools are crucial to a Woodworker's productivity and quality of work but that is exactly why you should let them buy these tools themselves look the last thing you want is for them to take that nice new shiny Square you got them build an entire project get ready to glue it up only to find out that it's a little bit off depending on their temper that tool is either going back to whatever company made it or straight to that special filing cabinet and you're going to hear all about it and you don't want that so it's best to stay away from buying these tools all together instead consider getting them something else they absolutely need to build projects consumables I'm talking about sandpaper glue screws shop towels filter bags dust masks and some finishing supplies these things are often overlooked and they are vital to finishing a project and they usually don't get stocked until you're going to reach for that last pocket hole screw or biscuit and you realize you don't have any more and now you got to stop what you're doing and go out to the store and get more it's a pain in the ass now that being said don't mess this up you don't want to get them something else to just toss in their junk drawer if possible I suggest sneaking into their shop and take a look at their preferences see if they're running low on any of these things if they are boom order it for them and they'll be grateful you did the next time they go and reach for that empty tight Bond 2 container and remember that you just got them a nice new bottle oh and if you don't have access to their shop just get them a Scotch Brite pad and a can of Rubio Monaco pure you can thank me later the fifth and last thing you need to avoid more than the employees at Lowe's hey there is there a project you're working on I know more than you all right is gift cards now I know some of these things I've talked about might seem like a lot of work and it might be easier just to go down to Home Depot and pick up a gift card and let them pick out what they want but I promise you this can backfire for example last time I checked Home Depot is not an authorized Festival dealer and Amazon does not sell eight quarter eight foot Cherry boards well not yet anyways you see my point you are essentially telling them here is x amount of dollars for whatever you can get from X so instead how about a custom gift card and no I'm not talking about one of those stupid ass prepaid visas I'm talking about a good old-fashioned card with a crisp hundred dollar bill or even better a heartfelt message written on a folded piece of paper it says something like x amount of dollars off of any one to full purchase get creative take a little bit of time with it and make it special for that person they will be thankful for it but hey speaking of gifts check out this video where I built a set of custom studio lights for my best friend's birthday he loved them but man did I have a heck of a Time building them bye ...
