hi there I hope you're well I got a lot of questions about camoto carcass construction and in this video series I'll be condensing many of those questions down into a set of easy to follow tutorials to help you understand why we make them the way we do this is very much a Back to Basics video series where I talk you through all aspects of Camino or carcass construction I'll be nailing carcasses together I'll be using screws on pocket hols dials Domino biscuits Climax tenso and peanut connectors but before we get into any of that in today's video I'm going to add answer the most asked question that I get about cabinets or carcasses a carcass is a simple box of just four components maybe five if you're adding a back and the question that I get asked the most is should the top and base sit on top of the sides like this or should they sit between the sides like this and I'm going to give you three solid reasons why 99 times out of 100 for a small wall hung cabinet like this the top and base should sit within the sides like this so let's start with the simplest reason of all Aesthetics this is a wall hung cabinet typically they're fixed around typically they're fixed around head height so it's always going to be at I level and I've chosen a small wall hung cabinet like this 600 High by 400 wide and 300 deep throughout the series because it's the kind of first project that many new Woodworkers make and the kind of thing that experience makers can do in their sleep without really thinking about it whether that's to be a bathroom cabinet or something to enclose your gas or electric meters so Aesthetics it just looks nicer to not see the cut edges of the material above and below the sides now that doesn't mean that you can't make a feature out of the cut edges if you're using a nice quality Birch ply it can be very effective to have those plywood layers running around the edges or you can Edge bend the top or use paintable tape to minimize that visible Edge but it's always going to be there it's always going to be visible and once you've seen it you can't really unsee it but when the top and base sit within the sides like this you either need to be up on a ladder or crawling around on the floor to actually notice so Aesthetics to one side the next reason is simple physical strength no matter how you're joining this together if it's hung on a wall then all the forces all the stresses are going to be pulling straight down all the weight will be putting stress on the joints literally trying to pull it apart so that it's only the mechanical connectors the nails the screws the dials or whatever that's actually keeping it together let me let me show you what I mean so here we go we got a couple of pieces of MDF this is Mr MDF you can tell it's Mr cuz of a green core I'm going to whack a couple of pins through the base and up into the side then I'm going to clamp the base down onto the bench and see how hard it is to pull it out so not exactly difficult at all because all you're really doing is literally pulling the side piece off the nail along its length along its axis they call it an axial load and it's inevitable the fixing the nail in this instance will pull out cuz it's much tougher than the material if the nail was soft enough to stretch it'll be too soft to hammer in let's take the same piece of MDF exactly turn them around and with a couple of the same pins nail through the side and into the base [Music] so that was exactly the same deal as before uh the base was clamped down and we're trying to pull the side out and we could actually be here all day long we'd never get that nail to break because we're applying a sheer load or literally trying to break the pin the nail and in reality what would happen is that the pins would probably Bend and the material would fail because well it's wood not steel but you get the point I'm sure something that's fixed through the side and into the base is always going to be stronger in these circumstances than a fixing that relies on its connection with the materials for strength so two good reasons so far Aesthetics and strength the third one is simply ease of production most small carcasses like this even if they become a Camino with a door fitted will have a shelf in there as well and when the top and the base of the cabinet sit within the sides then the shelves are going to be the same width so it's just quicker and easier to work your way through a cut list now the one caveat here is when the shelves are adjustable on rows of holes maybe or on bookcase strips so we actually want the shelves to be a couple or three millimeters narrower than the top and base well that's easy to accommodate as well because you can cut your top and base as usual then just use a 2 or 3 mm Packer against the flag stop that's already set and run out as many shelves as you need that's a quick and easy way to get the job done no measuring or marking you don't even have to move the flag stop which means you can always come back to it if you need to so that's this week's short introduction to Cabinetry Basics be sure to join me in the next one where I'll be looking at different ways of joining these carcass sides to the base and top but I'll leave it there thanks for watching if you enjoyed the video give it a big thumbs up or leave me a comment
